A pioneer in robotic surgery and microsurgical innovation, Dr. Shu has introduced novel surgical techniques that have helped advance the field of urology. In 2008, he authored the first published report of robot-assisted microsurgery using the da Vinci® surgical platform, documenting the first robotic microsurgical varicocelectomy and helping establish the foundation for robotic-assisted microsurgery. In the same year, he became the first surgeon to document the use of an Avance® processed nerve allograft during robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy for neurovascular reconstruction. These groundbreaking innovations helped expand the role of robotic technology in reconstructive surgery and laid the groundwork for new approaches to functional recovery following prostate cancer treatment.

In addition to his work in urologic oncology, Dr. Shu has made significant contributions to multidisciplinary heart, lung, liver, and kidney transplant programs. His expertise in complex urologic reconstruction, minimally invasive surgery, and transplant-related urologic care has helped advance the management of transplant recipients and support the success of comprehensive transplant services.

A dedicated clinician-scientist, Dr. Shu is actively involved in translational research and leads a basic science laboratory focused on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. His research is particularly directed toward nerve regeneration and functional recovery following prostate cancer surgery. Through innovative tissue engineering approaches, his laboratory investigates strategies to preserve, repair, and regenerate neurovascular structures affected during prostatectomy, with the goal of improving postoperative urinary continence, sexual function, and overall quality of life for patients.
